One of Rigg’s specialities is the use of a diverse range of materials and finishes. This meant we were the ideal candidate to make furniture for this inspirational teaching space at the London centre of a large international software company.
This case study features a few examples of the total larger batch of educational activity tables.
An element of industrial style was required by the specifier but this was to be combined with a fresh, bright, easily maintained surface. To this end a tubular scaffold style base was selected with a clear finish but with a hardwood plywood and HPL top. The HPL (laminate) surface nicely integrates the “raw” steel bases with the colourful wall graphics. Birch plywood is commonly used in furniture construction, but this alternative type was used here as it has a bolder, slightly rustic style edge.
The L-shaped, high corner table was produced using in-house CNC equipment. A neat edge detail was achieved using this method and allowed connectivity recesses to easily be incorporated. The dimensions were carefully chosen to allow the whole top to be machined from a single sheet of extra large Formica. In a similar fashion a small triangular version was also supplied.
Rectangular tables, mounted on locking castors were manufactured for the majority of this classroom fit-out. When versatility is needed, the fitting of wheels greatly helps with usage of the space. These items were also fitted with cable management cut-outs.
