A London based social media company contacted Rigg to discuss possibilities for office furniture for their newly refurbished space. Some examples of the solution are shown here.
The client was keen to have a slight flavour of the popular industrial style but with a fresher approach. To this end a variety of materials were used.
Plywood to the Rescue
Plywood is a wonderfully versatile material for workplace furniture. It offers benefits such as strength and stability, but being made of sheets of real timber still has a beautiful characterful appearance. It offers interest on both its face and edge. The latter was taken advantage of for this project. Rigg also offers Synk all plywood table in addition to the models used on this project.
In keeping with the style required, a hardwood version was used which has thicker, more characterful laminations. This gave a hint of natural wood to the tables, contrary to thick slabs of timber as might be found on more exaggerated industrial designs.
With a Little Help from HPL / Laminate
A rusty metal style laminate was used on the rectangular meeting tables which when combined with the edge detail and clear lacquered steel base gave a refreshing change to the usual wood and metal aesthetic.
The round Formica-topped meeting table showed how simple changes to material combinations can be very effective. The edge detail was doubled in thickness and the surface was a simple but sumptuous mid-grey from the Matte 58 range. Mounted on a clear powder coated pedestal base, the top appears to float slightly giving a lighter feel to the room. This feel fitted in well with the light and airy feel afforded by the glass wall
As found in other creative environments, bench desking was implemented. For this Rigg Trail was specified. Trail is a modular system comprising tops and leg assemblies, allowing long table runs. In line with this laissez faire approach, "old school" stools and benches from our seating range were supplied. The punchy yellow colour hinted at the fast paced but fun working environment.
Rigg has extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities at its Birmingham (UK) factory. This enables exciting, contemporary products such as featured here to be made from unusual material combinations.
