The Medicine Bakery in Birmingham city centre occupies a large upstairs room in a Victorian building. Access is via a large, attractive doorway from New Street. The impressive interior design required appropriate furniture.
The owner wanted a minimal and practical style which would complement the space rather than dominate it. Wooden top, slim frame tables and benches were chosen which would allow the space to be adapted to a variety of uses. Sometimes art work would be exhibited in the gallery and at other times the room might simply be hired out for a private function.
Usage as a daytime cafe was also factored-in.
Based on the Rigg model 25B, an aesthetically delicate but strong range, large surfaces could be created by pushing together in the centre of the room. Alternatively, individual sets could be assembled around the room. Thin square steel tubes are welded to form the frame of this product. Likewise the top is similarly slender.
The steel frames were powder coated in a contemporary clear finish whilst the timber tops were whitewashed. The metal frames enabled a delicate look to be achieved whilst being robust. Having the finish the same on the seating benches allowed for a simple, pure style which would not visually interfere with activities in the space such as the exhibition of artwork.
