Having our own studio and office at Rigg HQ in Birmingham makes us all too aware of the importance of a great place to work. Like many others we spend a large portion of our time in our office, and we want to enjoy being there. Times have changed. It wasn’t so long ago that all that was on offer were birch-effect laminate desks with powder coated silver legs. Now new materials, unusual combinations of wood and steel, add flair and interest and they have made all the difference. Contemporary office workstations don't have to use traditional approaches.
Tables can be rectangular or square and tessellate well if needed but why not create breakout spaces with circular or oval forms? They can be used as a recreation and relaxation point and the curves can be more of a distraction from the formal angles of typical tables.
High Pressure Laminate (HPL) opens up numerous possibilities in terms of colour and texture. You can go from subtle hues right up to vibrant statements for a truly modern office table. The surface is hard-wearing, durable and easy to clean with minimal requirements for care
Metal is for applications needing that extra special, perhaps indulgent or slightly esoteric feel. Zinc, brass and copper are all available, and a dynamic alternative to stainless steel.
Concrete tops look great either accompanied with other rustic materials or when associated with other daubs of bright colour. For example a powder-coated framework or perhaps our plywood base with coloured detailing. An eclectic mix of modern office desks can work better than strict uniformity and vice versa. Even if you go for a fairly strict layout consider mixing colours, textures and materials.
Seating is importan too. A set of matching task chairs is fine in many instances but benches can inject fun as well as versatility. When lined-up they can create coherence in an otherwise chaotic space. Stools are useful too, for encouraging informal chat and gatherings. We've seen quite a number of installations of desks surrounded by a various mix of places to sit, often naturally evolved from common usage patterns and individual favourites of staff.
